The science behind this subterranean treasure is rooted in ancient geological processes. For billions of years, hydrogen has been generated in the crust as water reacts with volcanic rocks or through the reduction of carbon-rich deposits. While this process also creates methane, pockets of pure hydrogen can become trapped in sedimentary basins.
