Here are some interesting facts about Ants. 1. Ants are found living on all continents except Antarctica. 2. The word ant is derived from the German word for biter. Ants are called "hormiga" in Spanish, "Fourmi" in French, "Ameise" in German, "Mǎyǐ" in Mandarin and "Namlah" in Arabic. 3. Ants can lift a weight fifty times that of their body weight.This is equivalent to a man lifting an SUV. 4. Ants and termites( known as white ants) are not genetically related. However, ants are genetically related to bees and wasps. 5. Ants do not have lungs. Oxygen reaches all the cells in the ant's body through small pores found near their stomach. As such, they also do not have blood vessels. 6. On the basis of duty, ants are divided into different categories such as soldiers, workers and queens. Suicidal worker ants stand guard outside the nest to protect the anthill(ant colony) from ant predetors. 7. Only the queen ant has the ability to lay eggs. The egg slowly becomes larva. The Larva becomes pupa and the pupa turns into an ant. 8. Ants communicate with each other using touch, pheromones (a type of hormone) and also using specific types of sounds. 9. Ants are intelligent creatures. They can solve complex problems easily. This allows them to find the shortest path to reach their own nest. They can also solve puzzles and mazes. 10. Ants are good architects. They can build underground tunnels,small forts and even bridges. 11.A category of ants called Army ants sometimes form a death spiral and kill themselves by moving endlessly inside it.Army ants are basically blind.
